Welcome to KSAE
The Korean Society of Automotive Engineers
KSAE aims to contribute to the development of the automobile industry through advancement
in automotive engineering and technology.
In April 1978, KSAE was established as a non-profit organization for the advancement and development of automotive engineering and technology in Korea.
KSAE has approximately 30,000 individual members in automotive related areas, including industries, academia, and research fields, 260 libraries and laboratories, and 400 corporation members including automobile manufacturers. We offer our members the opportunity to exchange information and opinions on updated study results through scientific lectures, research papers, presentations, and workshops, as well as conferences held annually in spring and autumn.
Our activities cover automotive research, studies, automotive standarlization, and recognize those who have made significant contributions to automotive technology studies by giving awards. We have been supporting the training of students through the event, "KSAE Baja/Formula/EV".
KSAE not only promotes automotive technologies, but also supports and nurtures excellent researchers and engineers.
We will do our best to improve the automotive engineering in Korea.
The Korean automotive industry was established in a wasteland after Korea declared its independence in 1945. However, the Korean War broke out in 1950, and automotive parts makers lost most of their foundations over the past three years. Thus, the beginning of the automotive industry in Korea was formally recognized in 1955 with the introduction of the car ‘SIBAL’.
With the government’s acknowledgment of the importance of the automotive industry, the need for academic societies, in which scholars, experts, and technicians in the automotive field exchange information on academic and industrial technologies and contribute to the development of science and technology on automobiles, has become a major issue. It led to the formation of the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers in April 1978.
The Korean Society of Automotive Engineers (KSAE) disseminated trends on new technologies in Korea through academic activities, including journal publications, conferences, workshops, and symposiums. As the stature of Korea’s automotive industry rose, it expanded its interaction with international academic societies, joining FISITA in 1981, and WEVA and EVAAP in 1998. Moreover, it hosted international conference, such as FISITA 2000, FISITA 2016, IPC-6(1991), IPC-13(2005), EVS19(2002), and EVS28(2015).
Since 2007, it has been supporting university students to realize their dreams by holding self-made car competitions (KSAE Baja/ Formula/ EV). KSAE has been designated by the government as a COSD (Co-operating Organization for Standards Development) in the automotive standardization field from July 2009. Since then, its role as the representative organization of automotive standardization has enhanced its stature, following its expansion activities on the basis of standardization in Korea, in addition to its programs on domestic technologies that meet international standards.
KSAE has been flexible in responding to environment changes in the automobile field, and in contributing to the development of Korean automotive technologies and of the industry through diverse academic activities and research support.

KSAE publishes the international journal for the dissemination of original research in all areas of Automotive Technology and Engineering. The It fosters thus the exchange of ideas among researchers in different parts of the world and also among researchers who emphasize different aspects of the foundations and applications of the field.
IJAT INDEXED/ABSTRACTED IN Science Citation Index Expanded (SciSearch).
Transactions of KSAE has promoted the technological advancement in the automotive industry by the publication and dissemination of ideas among researchers worldwide. The contents of the Transactions of KSAE mainly covers the field of automotive and related branches of engineering, science, and technology.
Transactions of KSAE is distributed to universities, laboratories related automotive field, and automobile & auto parts manufactures in Korea.
It is indexed in SCOPUS, Korea Citation Index (KCI) and abstracted in Google Scholar, CrossRef.
This journal is published in 1979 for the first time, and it consisted of the research and technical information, editorial column, forecast reports, and commentary written in Korean for the members of KSAE. Auto Journal is published 12 times a year and distributed to members free of charge.
KSAE has actively developed standardization activities for automotive and has been striving to develop Korean automotive standards and industries. It is an academic institution representing Korean automotive engineering, which provides practical assistance to members and industry-university-research institute through various standardization activities required for the automotive field.
KSAE has been designated as Korean secretary agency (Apr 2001) for ISO and IEC by the KATS (Korean Agency for Technology and Standards), tasked to respond to standard work for the automotive field. In addition, we have composed committee of experts in each field of automotive engineering and collecting standard opinions and reflecting opinions to ISO, IEC and Korean Industrial Standards.
The Korean government is pursuing private standard activity support projects in order to systematically respond to international standards that have a high impact on the Korean industry. KSAE has been designated as de facto global standards base agency for automotive and electric vehicle field since Apr 2010. As part of this, we have signed MOU with SAE and IEEE to cooperate with each other on standards.
MOU with SAE / IEEE
- Memorandum of Understanding in the Ground Vehicles Standards between The Korean Society of Automotive Engineers and SAE International
(Feb 2010)
- SAE International Standards Translation Agreement (Aug 2010)
- Memorandum of Understanding between The Korean Society of Automotive Engineers and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
(Sep 2011)
KSAE has been designated as the COSD (Jul 2019) by the KATS and has managed the fields of ISO/TC22 (Road vehicles) and ISO/TC70 (Internal combustion engines). We carry out standard development work such as annual demand investigation, development and review planning, operation of technical committee, and publish-revision of standards.
KSAE operates 275 standards for improving industrial competitiveness and helping to complement the parts not specified by KS and for bridging KS and corporate standard, to respond rapidly to technological advancement and various demands in industry.
The main objective of this conference was to consistently provide engineers and researchers the opportunity to communicate and exchange ideas on the state of the art development of the automotive engineering area. We are looking forward to seeing you in Korea.

KSAE Baja/Formula/EV is a series of competitions organized by KSAE since 2007, in which teams of university students compete to plan, design, manufacture, and race off-road for Baja and on-road for Formula and EV.
For the purpose of the competition, this event gives the student members an opportunity to enter a challenging competition involving all aspects of automotive engineering in order to create a more powerful, faster, and safer vehicle. The students will be able to learn how to become an expert in vehicle design and development.
